Alumnus honored with Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers

Dr. Matthew Wheeler, Gillings School alumnus and CDC researcher, received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government upon science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. President Barack Obama announced the award for Wheeler and 101 other American scientists on Jan. 9.

CSCC awarded new ARIC contract
The Gillings School’s Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center has been awarded a five-year, $19 million contract by the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to conduct the next phase of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study.
UNC, Duke-NUS team identifies first step to neutralizing Zika
A team of researchers from the UNC Gillings School and the Duke-NUS Medical School has discovered the mechanism by which C10, a human antibody previously identified to react with the Dengue virus, prevents Zika infection at a cellular level.
Kosorok elected AAAS fellow
Michael R. Kosorok, PhD, W.R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of biostatistics at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science.
Study raises concerns about timely follow-up to positive mammogram for the uninsured
Uninsured women under age 65 who received their mammogram at community screening clinics in North Carolina were less likely to get follow-up within a year of a positive mammogram, according to a study led by senior author Louise Henderson, PhD, adjunct assistant professor of epidemiology.
UNC-led, multicenter study to examine Metformin’s impact on infant health
Dr. Sonia Davis of the Department of Biostatistics will co-lead a five-year, multicenter clinical trial titled Medical Optimization and Management of Pregnancies with Overt Type 2 Diabetes (MOMPOD). MOMPOD will examine the impact of combined Metformin and insulin therapy on infant outcomes with mothers experiencing Type 2 diabetes in pregnancy.
Eng, Stafford, Cole and Darity honored at University Day event
Dr. Eugenia Eng and Paula Brown Stafford were honored at UNC's University Day ceremony on Oct. 11. Eng, professor of health behavior, accepted the Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award. Stafford, a biostatistics alumna, was named one of UNC's five distinguished alumni.
CSCC awarded NIH funding to improve health and well-being of young adults at risk for HIV/AIDS
The Gillings School's Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center has been awarded NIH funding to serve as the coordinating center for the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN), a research network devoted to the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults with HIV or at risk for HIV infection. Drs. Michael Hudgens and Myra Carpenter are ATN co-principal investigators.
UNC Gillings researcher to co-lead high-profile NIH grant to investigate environmental influences on child health
Dr. Rebecca Fry of the Gillings School was named co-principal investigator on the UNC ECHO grant, for which UNC was awarded $5 million by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to investigate how exposure to environmental factors in early development can influence the health of children and adolescents.
