Chatham Food Hub helps communities access local food during COVID-19 pandemic
August 18, 2020 The Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and UNC Health worked with Chatham County and N.C. State Extension partners to create a one-stop food hub at Bray Park in Siler City. The hub offers free meals and non-perishable foods for low-income customers as well as meals for purchase from local restaurants and farmers struggling to remain solvent during the pandemic.
Christenson-Diver named AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow
August 10, 2020 Dr. Elizabeth Christenson-Diver, a postdoctoral research associate at the Gillings School, has been awarded a Science & Technology Policy Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Her placement is with the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs — specifically, the Office of Canadian Affairs.
Harrison elected board vice president of the National Association of County and City Health Officials
August 4, 2020 The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) elected UNC Gillings School alumna Lisa Macon Harrison as vice president of the organization’s 2020–2021 board of directors. She has served as director of the Granville Vance District Health Department in North Carolina since 2012.
Primary care providers have a role to play in the treatment of opioid use disorder
August 3, 2020 Policies have recently been expanded to encourage primary care providers to administer buprenorphine in the treatment of opioid use disorder – a strategy that appears to be effective according to a new study from researchers in the Department of Health Policy and Management.
Puertas marshals resources to combat pandemic in 26 countries
July 28, 2020 Health policy and management alumnus Dr. Benjamin Puertas enrolled in the Gillings School out of a desire to expand his capacity to make a difference, though he had already founded a school of public health and helped many patients as a medical doctor. Now he is working to train health care workers and ensure the use of best practices in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

July 21, 2020 Dr. Cheryl Anderson was named founding dean of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at the University of California San Diego.
Haddad's pandemic preparation pays off in Laos
July 14, 2020 Samuel Haddad, a 2018 UNC Gillings School nutrition alumnus, already was working in Laos with Population Services International to prepare for a public health emergency when COVID-19 began spreading on a global scale. His work there supported an effective national response to the pandemic.

July 14, 2020 Timothy Schwantes, an alumnus of both the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and the UNC School of Social Work, was named a member of the 2020–2022 class of the William C. Friday Fellowship for Human Relations.
