Vizuete wins teaching award

Dr. William Vizuete

William Vizuete, PhD, professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, won a 2023 Pearson Excellence in Higher Education Award in the category for Championing Student Success. His commitment to student success, ethical research, and ongoing mentorship stood out among talented nominees. As part of this recognition, he will be featured on the organization’s website, social media, and PR outreach, and will receive a commemorative plaque in May.


Grant to study nutrition and health behavior awarded to Gillings faculty

Dr. Lindsey Smith Taillie

Professors Lindsey Smith Taillie, PhD and Marissa G. Hall, PhD have been awarded a new 5-year R01 grant from NIDDK. The project, titled “Evaluating the impact of sugar warnings on beverage purchases in Hispanic populations,” aims to study the effects of front-of-package nutrition labeling on sugary drink buying behavior among Latino communities. Their research will employ both experimental and quasi-experimental methods, including a randomized controlled trial (RCT) at the UNC Mini Mart and a real-world evaluation of front-of-package labeling in Mexico.


White House cites Shanahan research

Dr. Meghan Shanahan

Professor Meghan Shanahan, PhD has been cited in the 2024 Economic Report of the President, which provides an overview of the nation’s economic progress and advocates for the Biden-Harris Administration’s economic priorities. The report covers topics such as full employment, population dynamics, affordable housing, international trade, clean energy transition, and understanding artificial intelligence.
