About

Matthew Simon is a Senior Data and Geographic Information Systems Analyst at the North Carolina Institute for Public Health. Since 2009, working at NCIPH he has provided technical support and training in over 50 different data collection efforts with hospitals, non-profits, health departments and local foundations. As a member of the Community Assessment and Strategy team, he provides community data to inform and empower community-based organizations and their constituents through rigorous methodology that yields high quality data and results. His recent work has focused on asset and social determinant of health mapping, creating engaging and easy-to-understand stories with online, interactive maps. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his wife, two kids and Plott Hound playing in the yard, hiking through the woods and going on adventures.

Teaching Interests

Development of course material for two honors courses:
     New Frontiers: Environment and Society in the United States (field-based lectures)
     Mountain Ecology

Team leader for two groups of 13 undergraduates on a 42-day backpacking “walking classroom” through the Sierra Nevada Mountains (John Muir and High Sierra Trail)

Research Activities

Subject-matter expert in Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) sampling methods using mobile technology

Working to advance primary data collection methods for communities using new mobile and web-based software called Collect SMART (Survey Management and Response Tools)

Staff/Administrative Duties

Mr. Simon is responsible for providing technical assistance and guidance to state and local public health agencies with data collection and spatial analysis projects related to emergency preparedness and other community-wide or regional public health concerns.
