About

Julie Sakowski, PhD is an economist with extensive experience in graduate health administration education and performing health services research in academic, health care delivery system and consulting settings. Julie earned her PhD in Economics from the University of Houston and completed Post-Doctoral research fellowships in Health Policy Analysis and Clinical Services Research at the University of California, San Francisco.  

Dr. Sakowski is a faculty member in the Department of Interprofessional Health Sciences and Health Administration at Seton Hall University. Dr. Sakowski also proudly holds an adjunct faculty appointment with the University of North Carolina Department of Health Policy and Management. Previously, Julie was the Executive Director of the University of California, San Francisco Center for Translational and Policy Research on Personalized Medicine and Health Economist at the Sutter Health Institute for Research and Education.

Julie’s research interest is understanding the value of health technologies, treatment options and health care delivery practices in real world settings. Her current research explores the impact of within hospital variation in practices on the inpatient cost of care and patient outcomes.  Previous topics studied include: the optimal use of medications; the translation of personalized medicine and genomic information into health care delivery practice; the use of emerging technologies such as telemedicine and health information technology applications; and assessments of the administrative costs incurred by providers under the current fragmented reimbursement structure.
