About

Janet Place has over 30 years of experience in practice and workforce development, globally, nationally, regionally, and locally. She was part of NCIPH for 17 years before becoming the Director of Public Health Practice at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. She returned to UNC in late 2022 where she oversees competency-based learning activities and technical assistance for the Maternal Health Learning and Innovation Center. At NCIPH, she was the Co-PI/Director of the Southeast Public Health Training Center, The NC Public Health Academy, and Women's Integrated Systems for Health (WISH). She also worked with local health departments to build capacity to deliver the Ten Essential Services. At USC, she oversaw all practice activities and taught courses in leadership, systems thinking, and policy.

Place is a graduate of both the Southeast Public Health Leadership Institute and the National Public Health Leadership Institute. She provides technical assistance to state and local health departments, national associations, public health agencies, and foundations.

Place is an architect of the Council on Linkages Core Competencies for Public Health. She continues to lead this work. Her main practice interests are workforce development, health equity, rural public health, and maternal and child health.
