Ned has had three careers at UNC: Research (Associate Director of the Sheps Center for Health Services Research), Administration (Vice Provost), and Teaching (Health Policy and Management).
In HPM, he founded and directed the Executive Doctoral Program in Health Leadership from 2002 to 2006. He also taught a core course for Masters students, “Health Care in the United States: Structural and Policy Issues,” a leadership course in the doctoral program, a leadership and ethics course for second year Master’s students, and a seminar for students interested in careers in research, “Research Management and Research Ethics.”
Honors include the C. Knox Massey Award (1995), the University’s Manager of the Year Award (2001), the Order of the Golden Fleece (2006), and the Hubert H. Humphrey Teaching Excellence Award (2007). In 2001, the University created the Ned Brooks Award for Public Service, which is presented annually by the Chancellor. That same year, the University initiated the annual Service –Learning Award in honor of Ned Brooks. The Health Sciences Library established the Ned Brooks Library Excellence Fund in 2010. He was twice voted “Professor of the Year” by the Master’s students in HPM.
