Marshall named interim director of NC Institute for Public Health

Steve Marshall, PhD, professor of epidemiology in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and director of the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center, has been named interim director of the North Carolina Institute for Public Health (NCIPH).
“We are confident that Dr. Marshall will be an excellent interim leader for the Institute and the important work being accomplished under its auspices,” said Barbara K. Rimer, DrPH, dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor at the Gillings School. “The NCIPH provides a critical outreach component for the School, offering training and technical assistance to public health officials across the state, research and practice resources leveraged across the School, and practica and research opportunities for our students.”
Rimer said Marshall likely would serve for about six months, during which time a search will be conducted by an external search and leadership development firm.
Marshall succeeds Rachel Wilfert, MD, MPH, who served as NCIPH interim director from May 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018.
“We are grateful to Rachel for her leadership,” Rimer said. “Her experience in the development, design and management of competency-based training programs for public health professionals was essential to her oversight of NCIPH’s portfolio of training and workforce development programs.”
Wilfert will continue as director of the Institute’s Workforce Training and Education unit and as adjunct assistant professor in the Public Health Leadership Program.
Marshall, a Gillings School alumnus, holds an adjunct appointment in the UNC Department of Exercise and Sport Science and works closely with colleagues in that department on issues including sports-related concussions. As author of more than 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals, he has an international reputation in injury prevention. His recent work has focused on opioid overdose.
