Bio: Mallory Turner graduated from the University of South Carolina Honors College in 2014, where she designed an interdisciplinary degree combining public health, anthropology, Spanish, and writing to focus on Latina motherhood in the U.S. For her senior thesis, she interviewed ten Latina women who had recently immigrated to the U.S. about their experiences raising children in the U.S., including outside influences like discrimination that affect motherhood. Mallory compiled her research into a book manuscript in English and Spanish.

Following graduation, Mallory worked for a year at UNC’s Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute as a research assistant for early brain development studies on children at genetic risk for psychiatric disorders. She then spent a year teaching English in Brasilito, an impoverished town in Costa Rica, for a nonprofit called Abriendo Mentes. In addition to teaching, she planned and led extracurricular activities and events for preschoolers through sixth graders, working in partnership with a psychologist, the public school, and other local organizations.  Mallory is focusing her graduate studies on early care and education, adverse childhood experiences, implementation science, and health equity. She has supplemented her graduate studies with projects involving evaluation, qualitative and quantitative research, and quality improvement in coordination with organizations including Orange County Head Start/Early Head Start, RTI International, Carolina Population Center, Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

Mallory loves working with children, playing soccer, learning languages, and being outdoors.
