Fostering a community of respect and quality employment at UNC-Chapel Hill means hearing from voices across all areas of the University. Staff and faculty from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health are providing representation on important opportunities, challenges and needs for UNC employees through organizations within the Gillings School and the University at large.

These organizations include the Gillings School’s Faculty and Staff Advisory Councils, as well as the UNC Employee Forum and the Faculty Council.

 

The Gillings School recently established the Faculty Advisory Council and the Staff Advisory Council as a formal way for Gillings employees to have their voices heard and provide insight on emerging issues they may face as faculty or staff members of the Gillings School.

Representatives from the Gillings Faculty Advisory Council are nominated by peers and serve a two-year term. The 2023 members include:

Kevin Anstrom, PhD, MS, professor of biostatistics and director of the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center;

Liz Chen, PhD, MPH, assistant professor and Master of Public Health (MPH) concentration lead in health behavior;

Marie Lina Excellent, MD, MPH, assistant professor and Global Health certificate lead in the Public Health Leadership Program;

Amanda Holliday, MS, RD, LDN, associate professor and director of practice advancement and continuing education in nutrition;

Musa Manga, PhD, assistant professor of environmental sciences and engineering;

Melanie Studer, PhD, MSHA, assistant professor and director of undergraduate studies in health policy and management;

Jason Surratt, PhD, professor of environmental sciences and engineering and professor of chemistry;

Lindsey Smith Taillie, PhD, associate professor and associate chair of academics in nutrition;

David J. Weber, MD, MPH, professor of epidemiology and associate chief medical officer at

UNC Medical Center;

Karin Yeatts, PhD, associate professor of epidemiology and MPH concentration lead in applied epidemiology; and

Ciara Zachary, PhD, MPH, assistant professor and MPH concentration lead in health policy and management.

 

Representatives from the Gillings Staff Advisory Council are nominated by peers and serve a two-year term. The 2023 members include:

Bryan C. Andregg, MP, associate director of systems and security for instructional and information systems;

Kia Barbee, MBA, director of finance and administration in the Department of Maternal and Child Health;

Chandra Caldwell, business officer in the Department of Epidemiology;

Rhoda Cerny, executive assistant to the chair of environmental sciences and engineering;

Jon Cheslock, accountant in the finance unit;

Christelle Douillet, PhD, research associate in nutrition;

Rachel Evans, MM, academic program support specialist in the Department of Health Behavior;

Stephanie Forman, JD, executive and special projects assistant in the Department of Health Policy and Management;

Anne Glauber, MPH associate director of innovation in the research, innovation and global solutions unit;

Tamala Grissett, center administrator in the Department of Maternal and Child Health;

Hadley Hartwell, MS, research project manager in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering;

Joe Jacobs, MS, academic coordinator in the student affairs unit;

Kira Jones, MA, academic program support coordinator for the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering;

Rhesia Lewis, assistant director of dean’s office operations;

Jeff Oberhaus, social research specialist in the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center;

Jennie Saia, MA, associate director of communications in the communications and marketing unit;

LaTonya Simrel-Wright, MHR, human resources consultant in the human resources unit; and

John Sugg, Jr., MS, program coordinator in the academic affairs unit.

 

The UNC Employee Forum an organization of non-faculty employees elected by their peers. The Forum’s mission is to advocate for and constructively address the challenges, needs, and opportunities of UNC-Chapel Hill Employees. Employee Forum delegates are elected in the spring of each year. The Gillings School has a number of representatives on the forum, including:

Julie Theriault, MA, accreditation and training manager with the Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute;

Kira Jones, MA, academic program support coordinator for the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering;

Natiaya Neal, business officer in the student affairs unit; and

Matthew Chamberlin, associate dean for communications and marketing.

 

Finally, the UNC Faculty Council is an elected body that includes membership from the libraries and each school on the campus. The Council’s main functions fall into two areas: legislative and advisory. Representatives from the Gillings School include:

Dorothy Cilenti, DrPH, professor of maternal and child health and director of the National Maternal and Child Health Workforce Development Center and the Maternal Health Learning and Innovation Center;

Carolyn Halpern, PhD, professor and chair of maternal and child health;

Suzanne Maman, PhD, professor of health behavior and associate dean for global health;

Beth Moracco, PhD [Chair of the Faculty], associate professor of health behavior and associate director of the UNC Injury Prevention Research Center;

Lindsey Smith Taillie, PhD, associate professor and associate chair of academics in nutrition;

Anissa Vines, PhD, MS, associate professor of epidemiology and co-lead of the MPH concentration in health equity, social justice and human rights;

Kristin Young, PhD, assistant professor of epidemiology; and

Hongtu Zhu, PhD [Faculty Assembly Delegation], professor of biostatistics.
