Catherine Sullivan, MPH, RD, LDN, acting director of the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute and the Institute’s director of training, has been elected to the board of directors of the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC). She will begin service on the board at a USBC members’ meeting on Aug. 4.

The USBC is an independent, nonprofit organization formed in 1998 in response to UNICEF’s 1990 Innocenti Declaration, which calls on all nations to establish a national committee to coordinate national breastfeeding initiatives. Now a coalition of more than 50 organizations, the USBC continues its mission to enhance collaborations regarding policy and practices that support breastfeeding across the U.S.

“I am honored to have been elected to serve on USBC’s board,” Sullivan said. “The USBC is uniquely structured to include both national nonprofit member organizations and state coalitions. My goal is to make sure that their voices are heard and to work with other board members to drive policies and practices that promote equity and meet the needs of all families.”

Sullivan, who is an international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and registered lactation consultant (RLC), is a clinical assistant professor in the Gillings School’s Department of Maternal and Child Health.
