Doctoral student selected for APHA fellowship
August 13, 2015
Lorenzo Hopper, MPH, a third-year doctoral student in maternal and child health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been selected as a student fellow for the American Public Health Association’s maternal and child health section for 2015-2016.
APHA student fellows participate in business meetings, serve on various committees and work on section policy statements, among other activities. Each fellow is matched with a mentor who serves in a leadership role in the section.
“It is a true honor to be selected for this fellowship,” Hopper said. “I am excited to learn more about APHA and its maternal and child health section from leaders in the field. I have admired the work of former [Gillings School] fellows, such as Kristin Black, and I look forward to working with others while enriching my professional experience and contributing to APHA.”
Hopper is a research assistant at the Gillings School’s Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute. His research interests are at the intersection of social and reproductive epidemiology, with a focus on the impact of males upon reproductive health. He will attend a fellows’ orientation and participate in the American Public Health Association’s MCH section at the association’s 2015 meeting, held in Chicago, Oct. 31-Nov. 4.
“The MCH Student Fellows Program will provide Lorenzo with the opportunity to learn from exceptional mentors and leaders who, like him, are committed to improving maternal and child health through evidence-based policy and practice,” said Jon Hussey, PhD. Hussey, who nominated Hopper for the fellowship, is research assistant professor of maternal and child health at the Gillings School.
