Caitlin Williams

Caitlin Williams

Caitlin R. Williams, doctoral student in maternal and child health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been selected as a member of American Journal of Public Health’s 2019 Student Think Tank.

The Think Tank is a group of public health students who use their advocacy and communication skills to influence public health ideas and policy. Among other responsibilities, the group members develop editorials to inform and advocate about public health issues, boost engagement between the journal and the broader public health community through social media platforms and choose the cover of the journal each month.

Williams has taken on a number of leadership roles in her academic career, most recently as last year’s Minority Student Caucus co-president and interim fundraising chair for the Minority Health Conference. She also serves as a member of the National MCH Workforce Development Center advisory committee. Williams’ research centers on applying implementation science in service of sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice, particularly for underserved and marginalized populations.

“I’m looking forward to sharing science and evidence outside of the traditional research channels,” Williams said. “This work will help us engage folks who typically might not pick up a journal, but still want to learn about public health. It also gives us a chance to lift up the work of amazing community leaders and practitioners who otherwise might not be recognized by researchers. We all can learn from one another, and this interchange of ideas helps us get a little closer to closing the research-practice gap.”
