Dr. John Wiesman

John Wiesman, DrPH, Gillings School of Global Public Health alumnus and adjunct assistant professor in the School’s health policy and management department, has been named co-chair of the Presidential Advisory Council on AIDS.

Wiesman has served as secretary of health for the Washington State Department of Health since April 2013. He began his public health career in 1986 as an HIV/AIDS test counselor in Connecticut, where he was a member of the first group of people in the state trained to conduct HIV counseling and testing services.

A native of Wisconsin, Wiesman has worked in four local public health departments in Washington and Connecticut and served as president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) from 2017 to 2018.

He earned a Doctor of Public Health in public health executive leadership in 2012 from the UNC Gillings School, a Master of Public Health in chronic disease epidemiology from Yale University in 1987, and a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Lawrence University in Wisconsin in 1983. He is an adjunct assistant professor in the Gillings School’s health policy and management department.

“John is an amazing and inspiring leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS,” said Leah McCall Devlin, DDS, MPH, Professor of the Practice of health policy and management at the Gillings School. “We are very proud that he is an active alumnus of our School and that he is assuming this incredibly important role for our nation.”
