Revised public health-focused engineering master’s to be offered in fall 2014

The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering has announced the fall 2014 debut of a revised Master of Science in Environmental Engineering (MSEE) degree program, which will focus on engineering practice within the context of public health.
Students will learn principles of public health and epidemiology, as well as environmental engineering applications. Most students will complete the intensive program within one calendar year.
“Those interested in engineering practice within the context of public health will find this a rewarding program,” said Will Vizuete, PhD, associate professor in the department.“Each student will work with faculty members to construct an individual project, taking advantage of the myriad resources available within a department internationally recognized for addressing current challenges in air, water and waste management.”
“Our refinement of this degree program is an effort to make sure that the knowledge, wisdom and experience accumulated by our department and faculty members gets translated back into practice,” said Pete Kolsky, PhD, Professor of the Practice of environmental sciences and engineering and associate director of The Water Institute at UNC.“The revised MSEE program is intended to meet the needs of engineering graduates who want to strengthen their skills before going into (or returning to) practice. MSEE students will engage directly with the challenges of engineering for public health while limiting time out from their careers.”
