Bartram named chair of NC Science Advisory Board

October 12, 2017 Dr. Jamie Bartram has been appointed to lead the newly expanded Secretaries' Science Advisory Board, overseen by the secretaries of North Carolina's state environmental quality and health agencies. The board is tasked with studying ways to better protect public health and the environment from new or emerging chemicals of concern, including GenX and hexavalent chromium.

Allocation of public health research investments may disadvantage black Americans, study finds

Ammerman’s public service honored with Thomas Jefferson Award

Five new Gillings Innovation Labs awarded

October 5, 2017 Five teams of Gillings School researchers and their collaborators have been awarded new funding for Gillings Innovation Laboratory awards (GILs), beginning this fall. The teams are led by Drs. Orlando Coronell, Stephanie Engel, Emily Gower, Stephen Marshall and Kristen Hassmiller-Lynch, and Steven Meshnick. The awards are administered by Research, Innovation and Global Solutions, the Gillings School unit that manages programs funded by the $50 million Gillings gift.

Sullivan selected as Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics fellow

October 4, 2017 Catherine Sullivan, director of the Gillings School's Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute, was selected as a fellow in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.

UNC researchers receive $61M grant to identify effective treatments for asthma

October 2, 2017 Dr. Anastasia Ivanova will lead a five-year, $61 million study to identify more effective treatments for asthma attacks and will do so by combining two important tools -- precision medicine and 'big data' analysis. The work is funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Chair of maternal and child health to co-lead grant investigating sexual/gender identity, socioeconomic status and health

October 2, 2017 A new award co-funded by National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, co-led by Dr. Carolyn Halpern, will explore how sexual orientation/gender identity and socioeconomic status intersect and contribute to health and disease across the life course.

Pence, Hosseinipour to lead NIMH grant on mental health treatment in sub-Saharan Africa

September 28, 2017 Dr. Brian Pence will serve as co-principal investigator for a five-year, $3.6 million grant awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health to the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases. The project focuses on implementation science research and capacity building around mental health treatment delivery in Malawi and Tanzania.

Awards recognize outstanding postdoctoral researchers, mentors at Gillings School

September 28, 2017 One postdoctoral scholar and two postdoctoral faculty mentors from the Gillings School have received awards from UNC's Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.
