Denise St. Jean, doctoral student in epidemiology, has been selected as one of 40 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Health Policy Research Scholars from across the U.S.
Scholars apply research in their fields to influence policy related to population health, health equity and advancing a “Culture of Health.”
Communities without access to municipal water are at greater risk of having lead in their drinking water

In the study’s test area, 28 percent of households had lead in their kitchen tap water at concentrations above the U.S. EPA's health-based limit of 15 parts per billion, which is similar to the risk in Flint, Mich., during the 2015 water crisis.

Kosorok awarded ASA’s Senior Noether Award

Dr. Michael Kosorok, W.R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor and chair of the biostatistics department, has been selected for the American Statistical Association’s Noether Senior Scholar Award. The annual award is given to a distinguished senior researcher and teacher in nonparametric statistics.
Gillings School student wins Harvard Business School case competition

Mayer-Davis selected as member of 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

To ensure that America’s dietary guidance reflects the latest science, the U.S. secretaries of agriculture and health and human services have announced the appointment of 20 nationally recognized scientists to serve on the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. Dr. Beth Mayer-Davis was one of the appointees.
Gillings School mourns loss of Dr. Bill Jenkins, advocate for minority health and witness against racism

Dr. William Carter Jenkins, alumnus and adjunct professor at the Gillings School, died Feb. 17 at the age of 73. Jenkins’s passing was especially poignant given its proximity to the School’s 40th-anniversary Minority Health Conference, of which Jenkins was a founder and decades-long supporter.

A study conducted jointly by researchers at Diego Portales University, University of Chile and the Gillings School found that Chilean mothers understood and perceived the benefits of the country’s new policies aimed at combating childhood obesity -- and that their awareness influenced their spending habits. Dr. Lindsey Smith Taillie is a co-author.
