Dr. Greg Characklis

Gregory Characklis, PhD, Philip C. Singer Distinguished Professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, was elected recently for a three-year term to the board of directors of the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences Inc. (CUAHSI).

Characklis earned master’s and doctoral degrees in environmental science and engineering at Rice University and joined the Gillings School faculty in 2001. He also serves as director of the UNC Center on Financial Risk in Environmental Systems, jointly housed in the Gillings School and the UNC Institute for the Environment.

Founded in 2001, CUAHSI is a research organization that represents more than 130 United States universities and international water-science related organizations. Its 15 board members oversee the consortium’s activities and serve as liaisons to their communities. The National Science Foundation provides support to CUAHSI to develop infrastructure and services for the advancement of water science in the U.S.

“The CUAHSI mission of advancing interdisciplinary hydrologic research is critical in this era of global change,” Characklis said, “and I am honored to have been elected to the board to help accomplish that mission. CUAHSI’s initiatives for developing innovative computational and data mining tools, as well as its programs to support graduate students, will both play an important role in moving the field forward.”
