Gillings team wins student data analysis competition to tackle North Carolina health challenges

UNC-based NC Policy Collaboratory to receive state funds to study and fight coronavirus
May 4, 2020 The N.C. Policy Collaboratory, based at UNC-Chapel Hill, will receive $29 million to study the treatment, community testing and prevention of COVID-19 under a $1.5 billion coronavirus relief package. The University has been on the forefront of national coronavirus research, thanks in large part to the efforts of researchers at the Gillings School.
Gillings alumnus appointed CEO of Community Care of North Carolina
May 4, 2020 The Board of Directors of Community Care of North Carolina, Inc., has announced the appointment of CCNC President Tom Wroth, MD, MPH, as the organization's new Chief Executive Officer. Wroth — who is an alumnus of the Gillings School — will take on the new role beginning July 1, 2020.

Remdesivir, developed through a UNC-Chapel Hill partnership, proves effective against COVID-19 in NIAID human clinical trials
April 29, 2020 Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, reported that data from an international clinical trial testing the broad-spectrum antiviral drug remdesivir showed “quite good news” and should result in a new standard of care for COVID-19 patients. Remdesivir was co-developed by researchers in the Baric Lab at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.

April 27, 2020 In a time when a pandemic has limited the resources available to meet critical health needs in-person, we have moved into the digital space to seek assistance. In health behavior, students, faculty and alumni are coming together to develop online tools that help health care workers get access to child care and provide mental health support to teens who are feeling increasingly vulnerable. Biostatistics alumnus Andrew Williams is helping to develop software that can assist health care providers in modeling the spread of COVID-19 in order to prepare resources accordingly.

April 23, 2020 The Gillings School, including the North Carolina Institute for Public Health, is teaming up with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and other partners across the state to learn more about the prevalence of COVID-19 cases in N.C. that are mild or asymptomatic.

April 17, 2020 In Arizona, online MPH student Jeannie Hong is serving dual roles as a U.S. Public Health Service officer and a pharmacist for patients in a Native American and Alaska Native community. Nutrition graduate student Kayla Ferro and her peers are serving vulnerable homeless populations in the heart of Orange County. In Nevada, health behavior alumnus Peter Reed has collaborated on a statewide response plan to help older adults get the services they need while in isolation.
Four Gillings students recognized with E(I) Lab entrepreneurship and innovation awards
April 15, 2020 Four Master of Public Health students won awards for product innovations developed in response to current health care challenges as part of the fifth cohort of the Eshelman School of Pharmacy's E(I) Lab program.
