Scientists from the Gillings School collaborated with N.C. public health experts on an issue of the North Carolina Medical Journal documenting common-sense community-based programs and people that are working to make firearm ownership safer in the state using evidence-based approaches to lower the probability of firearm-related injuries and deaths.

UNC Gillings School to host new CDC center for outbreak forecasting, response

The Gillings School is one of 13 funded partners working with the CDC’s Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics to establish the Outbreak Analytics and Disease Modeling (ODAM) Network. This funding will support the creation of the Atlantic Coast Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics and Analytics, which will serve as the OADM Coordinating Center and as a Center of Innovation.

NC youth leaders champion vaping prevention at inaugural UNC-led summit

On July 24-26, the Gillings School hosted youth leaders and adult supporters for an inaugural summit to learn about evidence-based vaping prevention strategies, develop advocacy skills and build coalitions with other youth leaders in North Carolina. The summit was supported by the state's JUUL settlement funding.

Dr. Raz Shaikh named chair of Gillings School’s Department of Nutrition

He specializes in the study of how dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids and their metabolites regulate immunological and metabolic responses in obesity — and, more recently, in response to environmental exposures.

Researchers awarded Helmsley Charitable Trust grant to implement portable ultrasound in Zambia

UNC researchers at the School of Medicine and Gillings School of Global Public Health, led by Dr. Margaret Kasaro, have received a nearly $3 million award from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to improve access to portable ultrasounds in routine antenatal care in Zambia.
