Environmental Sciences and Engineering professor among best in the U.S.

A recently published list from Research.com named the best Environmental Scientists in the world and The United States. This list included Gillings professor, Hans W. Paerl, PhD. On this list, Paerl ranks in the top 25 of professors in the United States and top 50 in the world. According to the publication, their aim is “…to inspire scientists, businessmen and decision-makers worldwide to examine where top experts are heading and to provide an opportunity for the whole scientific community to get to know who the leading experts in specific fields of research, in various countries, or even within research institutions are”.

Gillings alum named President-Elect to the American Board of Orthodontics

Dr. Roberto Hernández Orsini, D.M.D., M.P.H., M.S., (UNC M.P.H. ’86) of Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, has been installed as the president-elect of The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) He is an associate professor in the graduate orthodontic program at the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine and will be part of the Executive, Clinical, and Certification committees.

Alum selected for U.S. Department of Transportation committee

Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee 2024

Dr. Shelley Francis, Gillings alumnae, was selected by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to the Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee (TTAC). The committee is to advise the Department of Transportation and the Secretary about plans and approaches for transportation innovation. Committee members were selected for their ability to provide diverse perspectives across sectors, geographies, and areas of expertise. The 27 TTAC members include experts from academia, think tanks, the public sector, labor, and industry.


Health Policy and Management doctoral student wins Diversity Award

The American Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon), a professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in health economics research in the United States has named Mukesh Adhikari, a PhD student in Health Policy and Management (Health Economics) at Gillings one of their 2024 Diversity Scholarship Recipients.


Garcia accepted as a fellow by long-standing statistical association

The American Statistical Association has bestowed its prestigious distinction of Fellow on 47 members for their professional contributions, leadership, and commitment to the field of statistical science, Dr. Tanya Garcia being among those named. The American Statistical Association is the world’s largest community of statisticians, the “Big Tent for Statistics.” It is the second-oldest, continuously operating professional association in the country since it was founded in Boston in 1839.


New research publication examines new ways of communicating drug claims

Gillings professor, Michele Jonsson-Funk, PhD helped publish an article that discusses the increasing willingness of many medicines regulatory agencies to consider real-world evidence (RWE) and real-world data (RWD) to support claims of efficacy, effectiveness, and safety. It is intended to inform discussions about the use of RWD and RWE for regulatory and health care decision making. Read the full article here
