Salzberg named to NAS advisory committee to U.S. Global Change Research Program

Dr. Aaron Salzberg

Dr. Aaron Salzberg

Congratulations to Aaron Salzberg, PhD, the Don and Jennifer Holzworth Distinguished Professor and director of the UNC Water Institute, who has been selected to serve on the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) Advisory Committee to the United States Global Change Research Program (USGCRP).

In this role, he will provide advice to the USGCRP – a federal program mandated by Congress to coordinate federal research and investments in understanding the forces shaping the global environment, both human and natural, and their impacts on society. This is in addition to his current role on the NAS’s Climate Security Roundtable, which provides guidance to the U.S. intelligence community on climate-related risks to U.S. National Security.

UNC hosts annual Interdisciplinary Nutrition Sciences Symposium

In September, the Department of Nutrition and the UNC Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) held their annual Interdisciplinary Nutrition Sciences Symposium (INSS).

The topic of this year’s symposium was obesity and the brain. The day-and-a-half symposium featured talks that ranged from epidemiological analyses to behavior and intervention studies to basic molecular experiments with rodents and cells. Talks from established and early career investigators included the gut-brain axis in obesity, the role of brain inflammation in aging and interventions.

NSS had a total of 68 attendees and received strong financial support from an R13 Scientific Conference grant from The National Institute of Aging, Sanofi, and The Hevolution Foundation to the conference co-organizers (Drs. Shaikh and Batsis). The planning for the next INSS is underway.
