11 undergraduates from the Gillings School inducted into Phi Beta Kappa

Students from all four UNC Gillings School of Global Health departments offering the Bachelor of Science in Public Health have been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the country’s oldest and most honored college honorary society.
They include:
From the Department of Biostatistics, Samveg Arpan Desai, a senior with a biostatistics major and chemistry and mathematics minors; Matthew Louis Gilleskie, a senior with a biostatistics major and a chemistry minor; Kyra Coates Mulder, a senior with biostatistics and computer science majors; Alyssa Jenna Tan, a junior with a biostatistics major and Spanish for the health professions and chemistry minors; and Sarah Nicole Wotus, a senior with a biostatistics major and an environmental science and studies minor;
From the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Megan Elizabeth Miller, a junior with an environmental health sciences major and geography minor;
From the Department of Health Policy and Management, Andrew Ward Maxwell, a junior with a health policy and management major and business administration and Spanish for the health professions minors; and Kevin James Parham, a May 2018 graduate with health policy and management and Asian studies majors and a chemistry minor; and
From the Department of Nutrition, Kathy Chan, a senior with a nutrition major and chemistry and Asian studies minors; Om Vinayak Dave, a senior with a nutrition major and a chemistry minor; and Adesh Ranganna, a senior with nutrition and public policy majors and a chemistry minor.
Phi Beta Kappa membership is open to undergraduates in the college and professional degree programs who meet stringent eligibility requirements. Less than 1 percent of all college students qualify.
Katherine Gora Combs, biostatistics and music student and co-president of student government at the Gillings School, serves as this year’s president for the Carolina chapter. James L. Leloudis, PhD, professor of history, Peter T. Grauer Associate Dean for Honors Carolina and director of the James M. Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence, is chapter executive secretary and faculty adviser.
The recent induction ceremony featured a keynote address by Buck Goldstein, University Entrepreneur in Residence and Professor of the Practice in the economics department. New members received certificates and Phi Beta Kappa keys, the organization’s symbol.
A total of 124 UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduates were inducted this fall as new members.
