Water Microbiology Conference scheduled for May 5-7

The Water Institute at UNC, part of UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, will present the 2014 Water Microbiology Conference: Microbial Contaminants from Watersheds to Human Exposure, May 5-7 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The event, a forum for researchers and practitioners focused on the intersection of microbiology and public health, will feature keynote speakers including Dr. David Kay, head of the Center for Research into Environment and Health, Department of Geography and Earth Science, Aberystwyth University (Wales); Dr. John F. Griffith, principal scientist in the microbiology department and coordinator of molecular technology at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (Costa Mesa, Calif.); and Dr. Joan B. Rose, Homer Nowlin Chair in Water Research, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Michigan State University.
Continuing Education Units (2.3 CEUs) will be offered. Interested participants may sign up throughout conference week. For additional information, visit the registration desk during the event.

Of note is a side event on Monday, May 5, titled Extreme Events Preparedness and Response: Microbial Contaminants and Public Health. The talk will discuss lessons learned for safe drinking water supply and basic sanitation in the context of natural disasters, and the impacts of contaminated storm water and receiving waters.
