Dr. Jason Surratt

Jason Surratt, PhD, associate professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been awarded the 2016 James J. Morgan ES&T Early Career Award.

The award is named after James Morgan, PhD, the first editor-in-chief of Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T). It recognizes the contributions of researchers who, early in their careers, are leading the field in new directions through creative ideas.

Surratt’s innovative research focuses on understanding the chemical formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosol in the earth’s atmosphere. This research can be applied to understanding the effects of fine particulate matter (very small suspended liquid or solid aerosol particles in the atmosphere) on air quality, human health and the Earth’s changing climate.

In March 2016, the inaugural award will be presented at the 251st American Chemical Society National Meeting and Exposition in San Diego, Calif., where Surratt will also give an invited talk on isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosol formation and how it impacts air quality and human health in the southeastern United States.

“Jason has had a truly remarkable start to his faculty career,” said Michael Aitken, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the Gillings School. “He has had an exceptional rate of scholarly productivity since joining our faculty, but more importantly his work is already influencing other researchers in his field. The award from ES&T is only one of several impressive awards that Jason has received, any one of which would be a great source of pride. I look forward to the exciting new discoveries that Jason will contribute in the years ahead.”
