Perreira to receive Graham Faculty Service Award on University Day
Sept. 26, 2014
Krista Perreira, PhD, adjunct professor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health’s departments of maternal and child health and health behavior, will accept the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award at a ceremony on University Day, Oct. 12.
The Edward Kidder Graham Award recognizes a faculty member’s distinguished service to the University of North Carolina, the state and the nation.
Perreira, who is professor of public policy and associate dean for undergraduate research in the College of Arts and Sciences, is a health economist who studies disparities in health, education and economic well-being, and interrelationships among family, health and social policy, especially as they affect Hispanic/Latino families and their children. Her current research projects include the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos and Implementing Health Care Reform in North Carolina.
She holds degrees from the University of California at Berkeley (PhD, 1999), Yale University (MSPH, 1995), and Pomona College (BA cum laude, 1991). Among her honors is UNC’s 2010 Hettleman Prize for scholarly achievement by a young faculty member.
Gov. Pat McCrory is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech at the annual University Day celebration, which will take place Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Faculty members are encouraged to wear their academic regalia and line up at the Old Well at 1:30 p.m. for a processional to Memorial Hall. In the event of rain, faculty and staff members should gather in Gerrard Hall. Those who would like to rent regalia for the University Day processional may contact Catherine Stotts (chstotts@store.unc.edu; 919.962.2427) at UNC Student Stores by Oct. 1.
University Day celebrates Carolina’s 221st birthday and marks the laying of the cornerstone of Old East, the nation’s first state university building, in 1793. The campus first celebrated University Day in 1877; it is an opportunity for the Carolina community to honor the University’s history as the nation’s first public university and celebrate its future.
