ESE student wins AGU’s Outstanding Student Paper Award
January 25, 2017
Rachel Baum, doctoral student in environmental sciences and engineering at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has received the American Geophysical Union’s Outstanding Student Paper Award.
The award, which is limited to the top 5 percent of students presenting their papers at the national AGU meeting, was given to Baum for her paper, “Trade-offs in Financial Hedging Solutions to Mitigate Drought-related Financial Risks for Water Utilities,” presented at the AGU fall meeting in San Francisco, held Dec. 12-16, 2016.
“Rachel’s work provides important insights into how a water utility can balance more efficient use of water and still maintain financial stability,” said her adviser, Gregory Characklis, PhD, Philip C. Singer Distinguished Professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the Gillings School and director of the Center for Watershed Science and Management at the UNC Institute for the Environment.
AGU’s mission is to galvanize a community of Earth and space scientists who collaboratively advance and community science and its power to ensure a sustainable future.
