Characklis honored by ASCE for service to the environmental engineering profession

Dr. Gregory Characklis
Greg Characklis, PhD, Philip C. Singer Distinguished Professor of environmental sciences and engineering at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has won the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Environment and Water Resources Institute’s Service to the Profession Award.
Characklis, who also is director of UNC’s Center on Financial Risk in Environmental Systems, accepted the award at the World Environmental and Water Resources Congress, held June 3-7 in Minneapolis.
Given annually to someone who has provided outstanding service related to water resources, the award was presented to Characklis “in recognition of his contributions to the engineering profession and society by advancing national and international research agendas in environmental and water resource systems engineering.”
A graduate of Johns Hopkins and Rice University, Characklis joined the UNC Gillings School faculty in 2001. His primary research interests involve developing solutions to environmental challenges through systems-based approaches that integrate consideration of both engineering and economic principles. Specific areas of interest include the development of improved strategies for managing water supply and treatment systems, exploration of the economic and environmental trade-offs associated with energy production (e.g., hydropower and biofuels) and the management of environmental financial risks.
