Study identifies most persuasive messages for parents considering HPV vaccine
Researchers from the Gillings School and UNC's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center have identified which messages are most likely to motivate parents to get the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for their children. The findings support physicians’ use of specific statements to increase uptake of the cancer-preventing vaccine series.
Particular HPV strain linked to improved prognosis for throat cancer
Gillings School researchers including Dr. Jose Zevallos and Dr. Andrew Olshan confirmed findings that a particular strain of HPV, a virus linked to a number of cancers, resulted in better overall survival for patients with oropharyngeal cancer than patients whose tumors contained other strains of the virus.
Linnan recognized as HERO for leadership in workplace health
Dr. Laura Linnan, professor of health behavior and associate dean for academic and student affairs at the UNC Gillings School, was honored Sept. 26 with a 2016 Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO) research award for her leadership in the field of workplace health and well-being.
Two alumni selected by Gates Institute as '40 under 40' advocates for reproductive health
Burcu Bozkurt and Lucy Wilson, alumni of the UNC Gillings School, are among the 40 people under 40 recognized as strong advocates for sexual and reproductive health rights by the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at Johns Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health. Bozkurt is co-founder of the International Youth Alliance for Family Planning; Wilson is a technical adviser at FHI 360.

CSCC awarded NIH funding to improve health and well-being of young adults at risk for HIV/AIDS
The Gillings School's Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center has been awarded NIH funding to serve as the coordinating center for the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN), a research network devoted to the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults with HIV or at risk for HIV infection. Drs. Michael Hudgens and Myra Carpenter are ATN co-principal investigators.
UNC Gillings researcher to co-lead high-profile NIH grant to investigate environmental influences on child health
Dr. Rebecca Fry of the Gillings School was named co-principal investigator on the UNC ECHO grant, for which UNC was awarded $5 million by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to investigate how exposure to environmental factors in early development can influence the health of children and adolescents.

Speizer named to RTI International’s 2016-2017 class of University Scholars
Dr. Ilene Speizer, research professor of maternal and child health, is one of six scholars selected to spend up to one academic year at RTI International, working on strategic research projects. Speizer will pursue an NIH grant for health interventions for young women in South Africa who engage in transactional sex.
Alumnus selected as distinguished professor at University of Alabama
Health policy and management alumnus Dr. Bob Hernandez has been appointed Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Health Professions. Hernandez earned a Doctor of Public Health degree at the Gillings School in 1981.
