January 14, 2018 Dr. Lisa LaVange, current president of the American Statistical Association and formerly of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, has been named professor and associate chair of the Gillings School’s Department of Biostatistics and director of the department’s Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC).

Former APHA president to deliver Gillings School’s spring commencement address

January 9, 2018 Dr. Camara Jones, past president of the American Public Health Association and senior fellow at Morehouse School of Medicine’s Satcher Health Leadership Institute and Cardiovascular Research Institute, will deliver the Gillings School's 2018 commencement address on Saturday, May 12 at 1 p.m. in UNC’s Carmichael Arena.

Bulik awarded Distinguished Investigator Grant by Brain and Behavior Research Foundation

January 8, 2018 Dr. Cynthia Bulik is one of 17 scientists awarded a Distinguished Investigator Grant from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. Bulik, professor of nutrition, is founding director of the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. Her proposal is a large-scale investigation designed to identify genes that contribute to bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.

Gillings School’s NC Institute for Public Health collaborates with John Rex Endowment to explore social determinants of health

January 5, 2018 The Gillings School's N.C. Institute for Public Health has worked with the John Rex Endowment to produce the report, "Exploring the Social Determinants of Health – Wake County," an assessment and online Story Map describing factors, such as child care, food availability and housing costs, which can affect the health and well-being of children and families in Wake County, N.C.

Study predicts tax on sugar-sweetened beverages in Colombia would reduce consumption, boost government revenue

January 4, 2018 Three researchers in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health are co-authors of a new study that estimates what outcomes would likely result if Colombia were to institute a national tax on sugar-sweetened beverages.

Rosamond awarded translational research grant to explore public health use of aerial drones

January 2, 2018 Dr. Wayne Rosamond has been awarded funding to determine the feasibility of having drones deliver automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to locations where they are needed. The NC TraCS/NCSU Collaborative Translational Research Pilot Grant Program awarded the grant.

Dasgupta examines social and economic factors that fuel opioid crisis

December 22, 2017 Dr. Nabarun Dasgupta is author of an American Journal of Public Health commentary that examines the deep social, economic and other societal problems that contribute to the opioid crisis in America.

New assistant dean for inclusive excellence selected

December 18, 2017 Dr. Kauline Cipriani will join the Gillings School in February 2018 as the School's assistant dean for inclusive excellence. Cipriani most recently has been assistant dean for diversity and inclusion at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Gopal delivers winter commencement address

December 18, 2017 Dr. Satish Gopal, alumnus and adjunct faculty member in epidemiology, delivered the 2017 winter commencement address on Dec. 17.
