For teens with Type 1 diabetes, lower socioeconomic status is linked with higher rates of obesity

Approximately 36 percent of adolescents with Type 1 diabetes are overweight or obese. A recent study found that, especially among females in this population, markers of lower socioeconomic status may be associated with higher body fat in the first decade following diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes.

Go NapSACC awarded $3M NIH grant to improve healthy eating and activity practices in child care programs

New study finds gene variant predisposes people to Type 2 diabetes and also low body weight

October 2, 2018 A new study finds that a well-known gene variant linked to Type 2 diabetes also may predispose a person to being leaner or having a lower body weight. The findings are striking, as many individuals with Type 2 diabetes are obese. Breaking the link between obesity, gastrointestinal cancers

September 30, 2018 Previous studies have demonstrated a connection between obesity and a person’s risk of developing colon and other gastrointestinal cancers. Now, scientists are investigating approaches that can break that relationship. Dr. Steven Hursting has co-authored an extensive review of research establishing the biological links between obesity and various gastrointestinal cancers, and of studies showing how various weight-related interventions may help reverse this connection.

$48M USAID award will support data use and evidence building in global health

Breastfeeding Institute responds to Hurricane Florence with support for infant and young child feeding

September 28, 2018 Hurricane Florence brought heavy rains and catastrophic flooding to parts of North and South Carolina. The Carolina Global Breastfeeding Institute was among the first responders, helping to ensure that infants and children stayed safe and well-fed in the aftermath of the storm.

Schoenbach honored for contributions to epidemiology

September 26, 2018 On Sept. 25, Dr. Vic Schoenbach was awarded the American College of Epidemiology’s Abraham Lilienfeld Award for career-long achievement.
