A Groundwater Approach to Racial Equity is an interactive presentation on the nature and impact of structural racism. We examine narratives around racial disproportionality and make use of compelling evidence to illustrate the systemic nature of racism and the fallacy of typical explanations that often get associated with particular racial groups. Before addressing racial inequity or perceived acts of discrimination or oppression, it is important to understand what institutional racism looks like and the devastating impact it wields on our nation’s people, economy and social institutions. The Groundwater Approach teaches how to use data to measure the systemic impact of racism and to track institutional change.

LIMITED SPACE REMAINS FOR WORKSHOPS ON JUNE 15, JUNE 26 AND JUNE 29.

Workshop dates:

Monday, June 15
Friday, June 26

Agenda:
The Groundwater Approach workshop is designed to help participants internalize the reality that we live in a racially structured society and that it is our racially structured society that creates racially disparate outcomes in all institutions. The sessions are a total of three hours and will run from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

Presentation Outline:
A Groundwater Approach: the case for a structural approach

  1. Racial inequity looks the same across systems
  2. Socio-economic difference does not explain the racial inequity
  3. Inequities are caused by systems, regardless of people’s cultures or behavior
  4. Origins: some thoughts on how we got here
