Working with Professional Interpreters Seminar

Myriam Peereboom, UNC Health Care, MBA/MHA, CMI, CHITM, is the Education Specialist for UNC Hospitals’ Interpreter Services department where she has worked in different roles over 20 years. She has earned both of the National Medical Interpreter certifications in the U.S. (CMI – Certified Medical Interpreter and CHI – Certified Healthcare Interpreter) and now guides others in the process of becoming certified as professional interpreters.

Ms. Peereboom has collaborated closely with other hospital Interpreter Services located throughout North and South Carolina as head of the Forum on the Coordination of Interpreter Services group until recently. She continues to work closely in the medical interpreter education process for UNC Health Care with local medical interpreter students, and community interpreters.

Her presentation, titled “Working with Professional Interpreters, Translators, and Research Participants Who Speak Primary Languages other than English”, will highlight the importance of working with qualified interpreters and translators when working with the Speakers of Languages other than English, also known as individuals with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Ms. Peereboom will detail the roles and modes of the interpreters, and the different resources available to reaching qualified interpreters. Finally, she will present some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when working with interpreters and translators.
