UNC Water Microbiology Conference

The Water Microbiology Conference 2019 creates a forum for researchers and practitioners focused on microbiology and public health issues to come together around the intersection of the two. This year’s conference blends interactive workshops with scientific symposia and poster socials. It focuses on water microbiology from watershed to human exposure including current concerns in recreational waters, shellfish harvesting waters, emerging technologies and quantitative tools. Participants will have a variety of opportunities to exchange ideas, debate challenging topics and explore potential collaborations. Management of The Water Microbiology Conference is led by Drs. Mark Sobsey, Jamie Bartram, Rachel Noble, and Jill Stewart, and is guided by an international panel of experts.

Immediately preceding this year’s conference is a full-day workshop, Antimicrobial Resistance in a One Health World, featuring keynote speakers Antoine Andremont (Emeritus Professor at the Paris Diderot University Medical School) and Laura Marin (Head of the Secretariat of JPIAMR).

The purpose of this workshop is to assemble international experts in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to develop and advance a one health framework towards combating the spread of AMR and protecting human, animal, and environmental health. Four interrelated sessions on Surveillance, Sources, Disaster Resilience and Sustainability, and Risk will feature invited panel speakers, group discussion, and break-out groups. Key knowledge and research gaps and opportunities to improve and advance policy towards preventing the spread of AMR in a one health framework will be identified. Lead organizers: Mark Sobsey (UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health) and Amy Pruden (Global Change Center at Virginia Tech).
