Anthony Viera, MD, MPH, has received the UNC School of Medicine’s Dr. James W. Woods Junior Faculty Award. Viera is co-associate director of the Health Care and Prevention Master of Public Health concentration in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Public Health Leadership Program (PHLP). The award was established by the late James Watson Woods, MD, a cardiologist and professor in the UNC medical school from 1953 to 1983, to support and retain promising young members of the medical school clinical faculty. Viera also is assistant professor of family medicine in the UNC medical school.
His current research examines better ways to measure blood pressure and assess people’s overall cardiovascular disease risk.
“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Viera as a member of our Public Health Leadership Program,” said PHLP director Anna Schenck, PhD. “He is enthusiastic about public health and it is well demonstrated in his teaching and mentoring in our program.” Schenck also is director of the school’s North Carolina Institute for Public Health and its associate dean for public health practice.
