CHAPEL HILL – The UNC School of Public Health’s Office of Global Health in collaboration with Family Health International (FHI) has established a fellowship program for doctoral and second-year master’s students. The fellowship will expand opportunities for students to work alongside public health experts who have years of experience in global health research and service.”This is an exciting opportunity for our superb students to collaborate with and learn from world-renowned researchers,” said Dr. Margaret “Peggy” Bentley, associate dean for global health in the School of Public Health and professor of nutrition in the schools of public health and medicine. “Family Health International is one of the premier research organizations in the world, and we are excited to expand our existing ties through this collaboration”.

Dr. Willard Cates, President and CEO of the FHI Institute for Family Health, said FHI welcomed the opportunity to work with UNC School of Public Health students.

“As the world grows more interdependent, and infectious diseases can travel around the globe in hours, the need for public health scientists with experience in international health becomes more pressing than ever,” he said. “We’re proud to be able to offer this fellowship opportunity to the new leaders in global health.”

Headquartered in the Research Triangle Park, with offices in 38 countries, FHI anticipates accepting two new students as FHI-UNC fellows each year. Selected students will work 15 to 20 hours a week at FHI, gaining knowledge and practical experience on research projects in areas such as HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, reproductive health, and maternal, child, and adolescent health. Such project work has the potential to become the basis for a student’s dissertation or master’s thesis. During their fellowship, students will receive university tuition support, a stipend and university health insurance.

“This is a great opportunity for all involved,” Cates said. “We look forward to working with the first recipients of these fellowships.”

Fellowship applications are available online at www.sph.unc.edu/ogh and must be submitted no later than Feb. 28. For more information, contact the Office of Global Health at ogh@unc.edu, 966-3564 or 4115C and 4106 McGavran-Greenberg Hall on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
