CHAPEL HILL — Dr. Anthony Hackney, professor of exercise and sport science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and professor of nutrition at the UNC schools of public health and medicine, is a new Fulbright Scholar using his public health expertise to benefit people in Poland.A physiologist concerned with stress and weight control, Hackney is working at the Institute of Public Health at the Medical College of Jagiellonian University in Krakow. The institution is one of the oldest universities in the world, having been established in 1364.Hackney shuttles between Chapel Hill and Krakow as he collaborates with Institute of Public Health faculty.

“I’m working on curriculum development at the institute and on developing joint research on obesity, diet and physical inactivity in people,” Hackney said. “Also, I have been presenting research seminars focusing upon some of my personal research dealing with physiological and endocrine responses in humans to stress.”

The honor is the UNC faculty member’s second Fulbright Scholar award. In 1997, he was appointed to Lithuania, where he and his family lived in Kaunas, one of that country’s largest cities.

Hackney is a graduate of Berea College in Kentucky and Kent State University in Ohio.
