Badriyyah Al-Islam and Laura Espy, two master’s degree students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Public Health, won first place in the 9th Annual Case Competition of the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) held October 5 through 9 in Orlando, Fla., in conjunction with the organization’s annual meeting. NAHSE is a non-profit professional organization of black healthcare executives founded in 1968 to elevate the quality of health care services in minority and underserved communities, and to promote the advancement and development of black health care leaders.Al-Islam and Espy are both second-year master’s degree students in the School of Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Administration.

“NAHSE is a long-standing national organization with significant stature in the field of public health. The award speaks to the emphasis that we in the department and the school are placing on diversity and opportunities for students to excel at the national level,” said Oscar Aylor, director of professional development and clinical assistant professor in the School’s Department of Health Policy and Administration.

Seventeen master’s of health administration programs from around the country sent teams to compete in the NAHSE competition. Each team received a case to analyze three weeks prior to the competition. The teams were asked to evaluate and make recommendations for the St. John Health System in Detroit about the use of the St. John Northeast facility, which closed in 2002. All 17 teams presented their recommendations before panels of judges on October 6. Six finalists presented again on October 7.

The awards were announced at the NAHSE banquet on October 8, an event attended by 600 healthcare administrators.

Al-Islam and Espy will present their NAHSE case in an open forum at the School from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. on October 27 in 2301 McGavran-Greenberg Hall. All students and faculty are invited to attend.
