Dr. Hugh Tilson has been named to the Board of Directors of the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Dedicated to raising the standard for public health, PHAB works with leading public health experts from the field to develop a voluntary national accreditation program that will help public health departments assess their current capacity and guide them to become even better providers of quality service.

Dr. Tilson has been with the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill since 1996, most recently affiliated with the Public Health Leadership Program there. He remains a practicing epidemiologist and researcher, and his illustrious career includes posts at the American College of Preventive Medicine, the Institute of Medicine, North Carolina’s Division of Health Services, and Glaxo Wellcome.

“Public health reform is a critical piece of the health care reform debate currently underway,” says Dr. Tilson. “Accreditation of our public health agencies will be as vital to public health reform as quality assurance will be to health care reform. PHAB’s work to support national voluntary accreditation is the essential next step to meeting this goal.”

Also joining the Board of Directors are Dr. Les Beitsch, Dr. Jack Lanier, and Dr. Harvey Wallace. In its announcement, PHAB noted that the four new members “bring…a wealth of public health experience through their research, practice, publications and senior-level advising. The dedication and contributions of these four new Board members will be invaluable to PHAB’s leadership in developing a successful national public health accreditation program.”

The four new members join other accomplished public health experts on the PHAB Board of Directors. For more information about PHAB, its work and its Board, please visit www.phaboard.org.
