SPH Partners with Schools of Nursing and Social Work to Provide Service to Coastal MS Communities
| The Public Health Leadership Program in the School of Public Health is once again partnering with the Schools of Nursing and Social Work to provide services to the coastal areas of Mississippi still recovering from the disaster of Hurricane Katrina.
Over 50 students and faculty from the three schools will be joined by physicians and nurses from the community in and around Chapel Hill to provide a wide range of services to a number of communities along the gulf coast of MS. In addition to cleanup and rebuilding, trip members will work in health care clinics, provide fresh food and health promotions services to older community members unable to travel, staff a recovery center in Pearlington, and work with local public health agencies to assess the level of homelessness in the area. Funds to support this trip were contributed by the Strowd-Roses Foundation, the NC Institute for Public Health, the NC Center for Public Health Preparedness, the Schools of Public Health, Nursing and Social Work, and donations from students and community members. Travelers will be staying at Camp Biloxi, a tent city for volunteers, and at the Lutheran Bethel Church in Biloxi.
