Dr. Jill Stewart

Jill Stewart, PhD, associate professor in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE), recently received the department’s Newton Underwood Memorial Award for conscientious dedication to students and teaching.

The award, which honors former ESE professor Dr. Newton Underwood, was among those presented by Michael Aitken, PhD, ESE professor and chair, at an end-of-year department event on April 28.

Master’s students Katherine Broadwater and Claire Tipton were among those who had high praise for Stewart.

“Dr. Stewart is accomplished, well-educated and extremely knowledgeable in her area of research, but in her role of professor she goes above and beyond being more than just a source of information,” Broadwater said. “It is obvious through her excitement and exuberant curiosity that she is passionate about both her research and teaching. Her inclusive nature and infectious enthusiasm make her an excellent role model for students wanting to further their studies in this field and for professors looking for ways to inspire their students.”

“Dr. Stewart radiates enthusiasm for her advisees and students,” Tipton said. “She is supportive and encouraging of students’ research and career-seeking efforts; she truly wants you to succeed! She is known and appreciated for her consistently helpful and constructive feedback during meetings and presentations. Many students in the department have expressed their support and fondness for her and agree that she is highly deserving of this honor.”

The award is administered by the department’s student organization (ENVRSO).

Two other awards also were presented at the event.

Master’s student Tori Klug received the George C. Bunker Award, given annually to an ESE student who shows outstanding scholarship and professional promise in environmental engineering. Chelsea Fizer received the ESE Achievement Award, which recognizes an outstanding graduate student in the Master of Science in Public Health or Master of Science degree program.
