Dr. Jennifer S. Smith

Jennifer S. Smith, PhD, MPH, professor of epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, was recently named a leading expert in early detection of cancer by Expertscape. Smith received this recognition for being in the top 0.34% of published authors worldwide on the topic of early cancer detection over the past ten years.

Smith’s research focuses on human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and associated cervical neoplasia and cancer. Since beginning her research in the mid-90s, she has published more than 250 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and has an H-index of 60. Her current research focuses on epidemiological studies of HPV and cervical cancer worldwide (primarily in China, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa and North Carolina), with a focus on prevention via screening, HPV self-screening and prophylactic vaccines.

“I am most honored to receive this recognition and be included among an esteemed list of fellow colleagues and experts who seek global solutions to issues of health and equity,” Smith said.

Expertscape is an online service that helps health care consumers navigate the field of medical expertise and find the most knowledgeable physicians and health professionals in the world on a vast range of specific topics. Expertscape analyzes the most recent ten years of the PubMed database and objectively quantifies expertise for 27,000 medical subject heading terms. Experts are organized by geography and ranked according to the quality and quantity of publications.

The experts listed by Expertscape have demonstrated their knowledge and expertise by publishing their research through a rigorous peer-reviewed process that aligns to scientific standards for inclusion in medical literature.
