Slifkin and Goldberg named Executives in Residence for the Department of Health Policy and Management

Rebecca Slifkin, PhD, and Larry Goldberg, MBA, will bring substantial real-world experience to the Gillings School, which will enhance student learning through teaching, advising and mentoring. As executives in residence, their roles will span guest lectures, advising case competition teams, identifying curriculum opportunities, engaging alumni and building bridges between the department’s programs and industry needs. The Executive in Residence initiative aims to honor practitioners dedicated to giving back while providing students with real-world insights.
Dr. Slifkin, professor emeritus in the Department of Health Policy and Management, was a member of the United States Senior Executive Service and directed the Office of Planning, Analysis and Evaluation within the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
While at HRSA, Dr. Slifkin served as the principal resource for all Affordable Care Act implementation issues. She also led HRSA’s outreach and enrollment efforts and ensured coordination with other parts of the health and human services department.
Dr. Slifkin directed the North Carolina Rural Health Research and Policy Analysis Center at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at UNC-Chapel Hill. She was recognized in 2005 by the National Rural Health Association as the Distinguished Researcher of the Year.
Goldberg has a long and distinguished career as a senior health care executive. He most recently served as the president of the Academic Division for Banner Health, overseeing the statewide clinical and academic partnership between Banner Health and the University of Arizona. Goldberg was also the CEO of the Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.
Goldberg has participated on several health care association boards, including the America Hospital Association, Tennessee Hospital Association, Hospital Alliance of Tennessee, Illinois Hospital Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society for Greater Chicago Area and University Heath System Consortium.
Goldberg is an alum of the Gillings School and received a bachelor of science in public health in health policy and administration in 1985. He earned a master’s degree from Duke University in 1989 and completed an administrative fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1990.
