Dr. Celette Skinner

Celette Sugg Skinner, PhD, alumna and adjunct professor of health behavior at the UNC-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health and chair of the Gillings School’s Public Health Foundation board, has been appointed chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center, in Dallas.

Skinner is the Parkland Professor of Community Medicine at UT Southwestern and has served as interim chair of its clinical sciences department for more than three years.

“Celette has made major professional contributions through her scholarship in a range of areas, including how to communicate with patients and the public about cancer screening,” said Barbara K. Rimer, DrPH, dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor at the Gillings School. “She strengthened her department’s productivity, funding and contributions in health services research.”

Under Skinner’s leadership, the department plans to expand its research in population and data sciences, with a focus on generating discoveries that translate into improved clinical practice. The department also will continue to support the campus-wide population research enterprise by providing UT Southwestern investigators with collaboration and expertise in biostatistics, data analytics, electronic health record informatics and project management.

Skinner will continue to serve as associate director for population sciences in the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center and as a member of the clinical psychology graduate training program.

A former member of the Duke University faculty before moving to Dallas in 2007, Skinner is an expert in health disparities, health communication and health care delivery research, with particular focus on cancer prevention and control in underserved populations. She is a regular invited adviser to the National Institutes of Health and academic institutions on cancer control and screening science.
