Jeffrey Simms

Jeffrey Simms, MSPH, was presented with the 2016 American College of Healthcare Executives’ Higher Education Network Regent’s Award at the winter meeting of the North Carolina Hospital Association on Feb. 19, in Cary, N.C.

Simms, clinical assistant professor and director of professional development and alumni relations in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Management, was recognized for his many years of outstanding contribution to the training of future health-care leaders.

In addition to his official and unofficial roles as adviser and career counselor, Simms energetically assumed the task of training case competition participants and accompanying them to contests throughout the U.S.

“One of the things I most looked forward to about the competition was having the chance to work more closely with Jeffrey,” said Chris DelGrosso, a winning Gillings School competitor in 2015. “He’s truly a great teacher, coach and friend.”

Shoou-Yih Daniel Lee, PhD, research professor and chair of health policy and management at the Gillings School, called Simms a devoted and effective instructor.

“He brings many years of health-care experience and, importantly, passion to his interactions with students inside and outside classrooms,” Lee said. “He is most instrumental in the success of our students’ professional and leadership development.”

Simms earned a Master of Science in Public Health at the UNC Gillings School in 1996 and Master of Divinity from Duke University in 1999. Before joining the UNC faculty, he was deputy director of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Rural Health and Community Care and assistant director of the N.C. DHHS Division of Medical Assistance.
