Dr. Wizdom Powell

Wizdom Powell, PhD, associate professor of health behavior at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has been named associate director of the UNC Department of Social Medicine’s Center for Health Equity Research (CHER) and research associate professor of social medicine in the UNC School of Medicine.

Powell also is member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and director of UNC’s Men’s Health Research Lab.

She is recipient of a number of honors, including appointment as a White House fellow (2011-2012) and fellowships with the American Psychological Association, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Kaiser Permanente Burch, UNC Institute for African-American Research and Ford Foundation.

In 2015, she received UNC’s Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prize for Outstanding Artistic and Scholarly Achievement by Young Faculty. In 2016, she was awarded a residency at the Bellagio Center (Italy) from the Rockefeller Foundation and was selected as a Health Innovator fellow by the Aspen (Colorado) Institute.

“Assuming this leadership role provides an exciting opportunity to apply my research, practice and policy experiences,” Powell said. “I look forward to supporting Dr. [Giselle] Corbie-Smith in her role as director and helping to improve health equity in North Carolina and our nation.”
