Dr. Lewis Margolis

Dr. Lewis Margolis

Lewis Margolis, MD, MPH, associate professor of maternal and child health at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, has received the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs’ (AMCHP) Vince Hutchins Leadership Award.

The award honors a recognized national leader with a long record of significant contributions to society and demonstrated accomplishments that advance the health of women, children, youth and families in the U.S., including those with special health-care needs.

Margolis, who joined the Gillings School faculty in 1990, earned a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Chicago and Master of Public Health at the UNC Gillings School.

His areas of interest include interdisciplinary leadership development, enhancing maternal and child workforce capacity, and injury prevention, with notable work on the importance of the graduated license for young drivers, an initiative that extends the training period for supervised driving and reduces young drivers’ car crashes and fatalities. He also is a strong advocate for concussion awareness and prevention in high school and college sports, especially football.

“Few are as deserving of this award as Dr. Margolis,” said Carolyn Halpern, PhD, professor and chair of maternal and child health at the Gillings School. “His decades of commitment to the well-being of women, children and families – and his unfailing dedication to our students, who will go on to serve this population – epitomize leadership and impact in our maternal and child health department and in the field of maternal and child health. We are extremely proud and fortunate to have Dr. Margolis as a member of our faculty.”

The leadership award, originally established in 1998, was renamed in 2001 to honor Dr. Vince Hutchins, a national leader and lifelong advocate for children’s health. During 15 years as director of the U.S. Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Hutchins expanded the federal government’s commitment to women, children, youth and families.

Margolis will accept the award at the Association’s 2017 conference, scheduled March 4-7 in Kansas City, Mo.
