Hilton Goulson, alumnus and former faculty member, dead at 84

Hilton Thomas Goulson, PhD, alumnus of UNC’s school of public health, former faculty member in parasitology and laboratory practice at the School, and longtime donor and friend, passed away on Oct. 21 in the Chapel Hill, N.C., home where had lived for 62 years. He was 84.
Dr. Goulson, who spearheaded the establishment of the Gillings School of Global Public Health’s John E. Larsh Jr. Award for Mentorship to honor his own mentor, received a Master of Science in Public Health from the School in 1953 and a doctorate in 1957.
The family will receive friends at Walker’s Funeral Home on E. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at the United Church of Christ on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, in Chapel Hill, on Friday, Oct. 24 at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
Dr. Goulson is survived by a son, Daniel Thomas Goulson, MD (UNC, 1989) and his wife Nancy Storck Goulson, of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Amy Goulson Cutrell, BSPH, MSPH (BIOS, 1987, 1989) and her husband Benjamin Garlon Cutrell, BS (Pharmacy, 1997); and granddaughter, Stacey Michelle Cutrell, a UNC sophomore biology student.
Dr. Goulson’s wife of 38 years, Jo Pinnell Goulson, died in 1992.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charles House Association, an eldercare location where Dr. Goulson enjoyed spending time.
