Dr. Jules Heisler

Jules Heisler, PhD, MBA, senior associate dean at the Gillings School from 2005 to 2007, died on Jan. 18 in Durham, N.C. He was 67.

Dr. Heisler had retired after more than 35 years of executive experience in health care and university administration. From 1987 to 2005, he served as the founding administrative director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, where he helped build a nationally recognized cancer care and research organization. He also served University of Pittsburgh as administrator of the office of research and worked closed with the senior vice chancellor for health affairs on a number of committees.

In 2007, he took a position as administrative director of Duke University’s Social Science Research Institute. He served there and as Duke’s academic administrator for the Duke Cancer Institute until his retirement in 2013.

“We are saddened by Jules’ passing,” said Barbara K. Rimer, DrPH, dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor at the Gillings School, “and I will remain grateful for his help in the early days of my deanship. We’d known each other for many years, having been introduced through our joint mentor, Dr. Ruby Isom, who received her doctoral training in health behavior at our School. Jules was a devoted husband and father, and we are proud that his daughter Jen is our health behavior alumna.” [Jennifer Heisler-MacKinnon received a Master of Public Health in 1997.]

Dr. Heisler received a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York.
