Dr. Penny Gordon-Larsen

Penny Gordon-Larsen, PhD, professor of nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, will become chair of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Kidney, Nutrition, Obesity and Diabetes (KNOD) study section.

Gordon-Larsen began her term as chairperson on July 1, and will serve in the role through June 30, 2018.

“Membership in a study section represents a major commitment of professional time and energy, as well as a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort,” said Richard Nakamura, PhD, director of the NIH Center for Scientific Review. “Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline. The skill and leadership offered by the chairperson determine to a significant extent the effectiveness and efficiency of the review group.”

As chairperson of the KNOD study section, Gordon-Larsen will work with a team to review applications in the areas of obesity, kidney and gastrointestinal diseases. These applications address a wide variety of transdisciplinary topics – ranging from genetics and the microbiome to body composition and built environment – and span a range of study designs from observational to clinical and primary prevention.

“This diversity of scientific territory makes the KNOD study section a wonderful and enriching peer-review community,” Gordon-Larsen shared. “I am looking forward to serving as chairperson alongside a wonderful group of highly esteemed peer-reviewers, and I am honored and pleased to give back to the NIH peer-review system that has helped so many scientists.”

“It is a great honor that Dr. Gordon-Larsen will be serving as chairperson for KNOD,” said Elizabeth Mayer-Davis, PhD, Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor of nutrition and medicine and chair of the Department of Nutrition at the Gillings School. “This is a major responsibility, and the Department recognizes both the time commitment of this role and its importance to ensuring fair and rigorous processes in the study section.”
